Standing All Day at Work? How to Protect Your Feet

Nurses, teachers, retail and warehouse staff, chefs, security guards — millions of people spend most of their working day standing. Feet weren't designed for eight hours on concrete, and over time that load often shows up as heel pain, sore arches and tired legs. The good news: a handful of habits make a real difference.

What standing all day does to your feet

When you walk, the load on your feet keeps shifting. When you stand still, the same spots — especially the heel — carry your weight continuously. On hard floors there's no give, so the pressure has nowhere to go. That's why long standing jobs are so closely linked to heel spurs and plantar fasciitis. (New to the topic? How to protect your feet on long shifts

Cushion every step

The most direct way to reduce the load on your heel is to add cushioning between your foot and the floor. Work shoes often come with a thin factory insole; swapping it for a cushioned one changes every minute of your shift.

Keep moving

Shift your weight from foot to foot, walk a few steps when you can, and use breaks to sit down. Small movements stop pressure from staying on the same spot.

Use an anti-fatigue mat

If you work at a fixed station — a counter, a till, a workbench — a mat underfoot adds give to a hard floor.

Choose work shoes carefully

Look for a cushioned heel, a firm heel counter and some arch support. Our guide to shoes for heel spurs covers what to look for.

Support your legs too

Many people who stand all day like gentle compression around the ankles, such as ankle compression sleeves, for a more supported feel by the end of the day.

Recover in the evening

Stretch your calves, roll the sole of your foot gently, and put your feet up. See 5 Gentle Stretches for Heel Spurs and Plantar Fasciitis.
